With the establishment of Sumerak Pultrusion Resource International
(SPRI), Sumerak has once again ventured into new territory
in the pultrusion marketplace. Consultation in a broad spectrum
of topics, from marketing to manufacturing specific to the
pultrusion industry, is now available for international clients.
New proprietary products and services are being developed
to answer the needs of the pultrusion manufacturing environment.
was introduced in 2011 as the next generation of pultrusion
process optimization equipment. A newly acquired Rapid Prototyping
capability is now available (through the fully-owned affiliate
Parts Direct ) to provide product and process infeed
prototyping for pultruders.
Joseph E. Sumerak Enterprises, LLC -- March 2007 to Current
Skills in process optimization and composite materials design and processing are being provided on a consultation basis to a variety of clients outside of the pultrusion industry. Project management contracts are in place with several domestic and international clients. Recent projects include optimization of injection molding of BMC materials which shares many of the challenges of pultrusion in a reactive processing environment. Other business interests outside of the composites industry are operating under the umbrella of JESE, LLC.
Pultrusion Dynamics, Inc. -- 1992 to March, 2007
In 1992, founded Pultrusion Dynamics, Inc. in order to pursue advanced research topics in the area of heat transfer and pultrusion process modeling. This work led to new techniques for off-line and on-line process optimization as well as novel processing approaches. Pultrusion Dynamics was acquired in 1997 by Creative Pultrusion, Inc. and operated as the Technology Center of Creative Pultrusions selling pultrusion equipment, tooling and technology products and services to the pultrusion industry. In addition to responsibilities as President of the Pultrusion Dynamics Division, Sumerak was Vice President of Technology for Creative Pultrusions with the Research and Development staff under his direct supervision. Contract and proprietary R&D programs were administered in both the Corporate PA and Divisional Ohio locations. Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project proposals were written and projects awarded and executed at Phase I and Phase II levels.
Pultrusion Technology, Incorporated -- 1981 to 1992
In 1981 co-founded Pultrusion Technology Inc. and developed a complete line of pultrusion processing machinery, tooling and characterization instruments. Over 150 turnkey process lines were designed, manufactured and installed worldwide with hundreds of pultruded profiles successfully developed. During this period numerous publications were authored on processing topics and industry recognition received for contributions in this area. Supervised all technical and manufacturing personnel (51 employees) and managed company financial activities. After sale of the company in 1989 to MMFG, development of pultrusion processing advancements was pursued as Technical Director of the PTI Division of MMFG (now Strongwell).
The Glastic Corporation -- 1975 to 1981
Process Engineer assigned to the expansion of the pultrusion product line. Responsibilities included manufacturing engineering, composite and product design. Increasing responsibilities led to management of the engineering efforts for other processes as well including compression molding, flat sheet molding and BMC compounding and extrusion.

- Invented Selective Interval Pulshaping process for continuous variable cross-section thermoset pultrusions. U.S. and foreign patents issued. 1995.
TOPSCAN process optimization as an evolutionary high capability
replacement for Gelstar. 1995.
- Developed TOPDIE thermal analysis FEA software for die heating analysis and optimization to increase line speeds. 1996.
- Designed Dynapul line of pultrusion machines for Creative Pultrusions. 1999.
- Invented an improved pultrusion grating design with reduced assembly labor. 2002. U.S. patent issued.
Sumerak has been a member of SPI, SME, SAMPE, PIC, EPIC and EPTA. He has traveled extensively and lectured on pultrusion processing topics in seminar and international conference venues.
Over 30 articles on pultrusion processing including several chapters for technical books have been published.
